PIC is introducing digital selection in the determination of breeding values, utilizing advanced technology such as cameras and software to optimize the breeding process. This technology replaces subjective assessments by staff with objective measurements, significantly improving accuracy and consistency in breeding. A key application area is the evaluation of leg structure and movement patterns in pigs, where software is used to analyse and score the pigs’ movements based on algorithms derived from the assessments of experienced scorers.

In addition to evaluating leg structure, digital selection also focuses on the connection between movement and longevity. PIC is investigating how the way pigs walk, including stride length and the angle of joints like the shoulder and hip, can be linked to their life expectancy. This offers new opportunities to select breeding stock based on objective criteria, thereby shortening the generation interval and achieving breeding goals more quickly.

PIC expects to roll out digital selection globally by the end of 2024, starting with the replacement of subjective leg scores with objective ones in the US and Canada. In the long term, PIC envisions that every nucleus breeder will have a camera system in their barn, allowing various behavioural and movement aspects of pigs to be accurately monitored and analysed.
