Practical tips for starting a new flock

For a successful new flock, you need hens that are well feathered, lay many eggs and have low mortality rates. This is every layer farmer’s ideal. In addition to the condition of the new flock, their start in the house is also crucial.

“If the start is good, the rest usually goes well,” says Ed Obbink, laying hen consultant at Pluriton. With extensive experience and numerous barn visits in the Netherlands and Germany, Ed is skilled at noticing details that others might miss. His goal is to create the best conditions for the hens. His first tip: ensure a smooth transition from rearing to laying.

Gradual change of environment
“A rearing hen and a laying hen are the same animal and need time to adapt to the new environment,” explains Ed. He advises keeping the feed the same for the first few days and gradually adjusting the light intensity. If lights were at 15 lux during rearing, don’t switch to 60 lux immediately. Increase gradually to avoid over-stimulation.

How to know when hens are accustomed?
“Weight is a reliable indicator,” says Ed. Use a digital weighing plate or unster to weigh the hens. When they regain their original weight lost during transport, they are adjusted to the barn and ready for stimulation.

Optimal start for 17-week-old laying hens
Every barn is unique. Ed personally inspects each one to ensure optimal conditions, checking lighting, water lines, and cold spots. He tests the lighting plan in an empty barn to ensure everything is right before the hens arrive. Proper lighting is crucial; too much blue light can reduce the hens’ activity.

Short lines and fast response
Ed and his colleague Henri provide barn visits and personal guidance. Ed stresses, “Don’t avoid problems; think in solutions.” For example, with an issue of outdoor nest eggs, Ed visited a barn early in the morning to fix settings that were causing problems.
