Description

Practical solutions for keeping pigs with long tails!

Tails are docked on most pig farms to prevent tail biting. EU legislation and the action program for vitalizing pig farming state that tail docking must be ended by 2030. Despite the fact that a lot of research has already been done, many pig farmers are not yet ready to leave the tails of the pigs long, because there is simply not yet a clear and well-functioning solution. Stopping docking can have major consequences for animal welfare, food waste and the economic well-being of pig farmers. In short, time for action! The project ‘The compass to a long pigtail’ was started last autumn.

This is a collaboration between POV, Booijink Veevoeders, veterinary practice Lintjeshof, PIC-NL and VKON. Within this project we want to look for practical solutions together with pig farmers to reduce and prevent tail biting. The aim is to take a closer look at 6 different themes of animal health, housing, climate, nutrition, genetics and pig farming with various study groups with pig farmers.
